COMMENT TESTER LA POROSITÉ DE VOS CHEVEUX ET ADAPTER SA ROUTINE CAPILLAIRE ?

Hair porosity is an important factor to consider when establishing an effective hair routine. Understanding your hair's porosity level can help you choose appropriate products and implement appropriate care, while avoiding wasted time and money!

So in this article we will explain how to test your hair porosity and what that means based on your results.

What is hair porosity?

Hair porosity refers to your strands' ability to absorb and retain moisture. It is determined by the structure of the cuticle, the outer layer of each hair. A healthy, well-sealed cuticle reduces porosity, while a damaged or open cuticle results in increased porosity.

How to test the porosity of your hair?

Here are two simple tests you can do at home to determine the porosity of your hair.

The floatation test: Take a clean, dry section of hair and place it in a glass of water. If your hair is floating on the surface, it means it has low porosity. If they stay in the middle of the glass, you have medium porosity. And finally, if they sink to the bottom, this indicates high porosity.

The Absorption Test: Spray water on a small section of clean, dry hair. Observe how your hair reacts. If they take time to absorb water, you have low porosity. If they absorb water quickly, your porosity is high.

What do the porosity test results mean?

Once you have performed one of these tests, you should interpret the results to better understand your hair's needs.

Low porosity: If your hair has low porosity, it means the cuticle is well sealed, making it harder for moisture to absorb. You will need to use light, moisturizing products to avoid weighing down your hair. Water-based products are ideal, and you may also consider using gentle heat when treating your hair to open the cuticle slightly and make products easier to absorb.

Medium Porosity: Medium porosity indicates a healthy balance of your hair's ability to absorb moisture. You have a wide range of product options, but be sure to maintain a balance between hydration and cuticle protection. Use products that moisturize without weighing your hair down, and consider using sealants to lock in moisture inside the cuticle.

High Porosity: If your hair has high porosity, it means the cuticle is damaged or open, leading to rapid moisture absorption but also rapid loss. You'll need moisture-rich products to help restore the health of your hair. Use products with nourishing oils and proteins to strengthen the cuticle and reduce moisture loss. Avoid heating appliances and use sealing techniques to retain moisture.

Knowing your hair's porosity is essential to choosing the right products and implementing a suitable hair care routine. By understanding whether your hair has low, medium or high porosity, you can select the appropriate products and provide the necessary care to keep your hair healthy, hydrated and beautiful. Don’t hesitate to test your porosity and adjust your routine based on the results obtained. Your hair will thank you!
